Notes On The Nine-Six

BEAT RADIO and NETRADIO Forget the big FMs-the real Twin Cities radio wars were waged on two fronts this year: online and on the fringe. The allegedly lucrative NetRadio (www.netradio.net), created by some smart entrepreneurs over in St. Anthony Main, suggested the advent of "netcastting" as a powerful medium with the potential for a valuable community-centric role. We shall see. Meanwhile, Alan Freed's "pirate" dance station, Beat Radio, circumvented the law and survived for 103 days until the feds nabbed their gear without a trial. The beginning or the end of indie airwaves? We shall see. (Simon Peter Groebner)
